April Meeting – You and the Skew

Presentation –  You and the Skew by Tom Parker

Tom started his presentation by discussing the variety of skew chisels he uses in his turnings and how he sharpens them.

Tom suggests that a larger skew chisel is actually easier to control for the beginner. No matter how large the chisel, the cut is basically the same. Here Tom is using a planing cut to quickly take a spindle from square to round with a nice, smooth surface.

Tom cut from the center of the spindle to the right and then from the center back to the left, always cutting ‘downhill’ with the grain. He suggests that there are times where the grain pattern in the wood will favor one direction over another to get a cleaner cut.

The true test of the presentation is to bring up a volunteer from the crowd and see if they can take what you’ve presented and put it into practice. Good work Chuck and thank-you Tom!
