Dan explaining how to get balanced grain in the final bowl by inspecting the log and planning your chainsaw cuts.
Various log processing techniques and how these decisions would affect how the grain looks in the final result were discussed.
On this night Dan was going to turn a standard format bowl with the rim of the bowl toward the pith.
Dan had explained how to safely and efficiently use the bowl gouge when profiling the outer surface of the bowl and here he is reviewing those concepts and how they apply to turning the inside of the bowl
Maybe a larger visual aid will help clearly demonstrate these concepts? Yes, Dan had that need covered well too!
Anchor the tool on the tool rest, glide the tool’s bevel on the surface of the wood… control the edge as you make your cut. The ABC’s of wood turning were well demonstrated in every cut Dan made. He also included helpful hints in use of your legs to help smoothly most those cuts of the long, smooth curves of a bowl.
From the log to the final ‘green turned’ bowl in just over an hour. Well done Dan!
Yes, after the bowl dries down it will be sanded and finished. The finishes Dan likes and when and why he uses each type of finish was also discussed.
