The design concepts used in John’s presentation are well covered in Richard Raffan’s wonderful book ‘The Art of Turned Bowls’.
John’s twist on this was to only bother drawing 1/2 of the bowl and if you needed to see the whole thing then to hold the right edge to the surface of a mirror. This makes it easier to get a good looking example with all of the key dimensions identified.
See handout for more details… yes, this was a repeat of a demo John did 10 years ago at an August club meeting.

Start the team discussions…
Two designs were selected and then turned from some green logs. Importance of technique to reduce any tear-out was stressed. These bowls were not sanded when green obviously so the surface finish in these photos was ‘right off the tool’.
The first was a wide-rimmed ‘Roman ogee’ profile with a bead in walnut
The second was an ash ‘calabash’ (gourd shape) with some ‘square beads’ up by the rim…
Both bowls shown here are after John returned home and used his Cole jaws to hold the bowls and turn away the spigots. He had forgotten these helpful jaws on the night of the presentation. It is interesting to see how the walnut when exposed to the air had darkened a bit in the sapwood area in the photo above
