The ornaments Todd brought in for the November Show-and-Tell ead to a request for this presentation.
The six pointed ‘star’ will be six of the eight points on this cube.
One point of the cube is in the hole in the center of the spindle, the opposite point is in the live center. The centering pin has been removed from the live center and the cube’s point is placed in that recess.
There are a set of 3 points spinning in two rows that Todd watches as he turns from the points down to the center of the block.
It is a bit easier to see those points spinning in this shot.
Todd turned a tenon on the side of the block in the tailstock and then held that tenon in a 4 jaw chuck before turning the inside of the star for three of the points.
Todd then prepared a jam chuck that had the same curve as the inside of the star he just turned
The star was positioned on the jam chuck using the tailstock to align it. It was held in place with painters tape.
The tailstock was left in place for the heavy cuts but removed for the final cuts. These cuts were all light and ‘toward the center’ of the piece to avoid tearing it away from the jam chuck.
We don’t sand in the club house so when you pass it around you want a clean cut. Well done Todd
This ornament has a two-part finial where the bottom part has a tenon that will pass through that hole drilled in the center of the star and the top half of the finial will be drilled to fit on this tenon.
All three pieces of the finished ornament.
