Todd VanDewalker presents ‘Christmas Ornament’
Inside-out turning, wine bottle ornament

Todd used a set of special purpose jigs for holding the staves for his inside-out turning.  There was one jig for the tailstock and another that threaded on the spindle of the lathe.  Each jig had a 2 x 2 inch square recess and a kerf that permitted everything to be tightened down with some band clamps.  He did not do the usual ‘glued staves’ approach.

Todd used thin cardboard patterns to guide his turning of the inside of the bottles with the staves held in an inside-out orientation.

After completing the turning of the inside of the bottle the staves were realigned and glued up in their final orientation.  The goblet could be inserted at this time.

Todd had some blanks already glued and ready to go.  These were held in the same fixtures as he turned the outside of the bottle.

After turning and sanding the outside of the body, neck and base of the bottle Todd usually parts off the waste on the bandsaw before painting the piece.
