When Brad goes out to the shop to turn pens his goal is to turn a whole ‘batch’ of them so he sits at his lathe.
This is the first time that the club used the ‘overhead camera boom’ that Jerry Huneke made and it really helped everyone see the action!
Brand considers the grain on a pen blank and marks the batch before he drills for the tube.
An accurately drilled hole leads to having ‘enough wood’ for any design options when turning the barrel of the pen.
The glue used varies based on the wood or acrylic, etc.
A press is used to insert the tubes without mishap.
Brad prefers to trim the blanks accurately back to the start of the tube using a sanding wheel.
The ‘rod’ on the left goes into the tube glued into the blank to hold it as right angles to the sanding wheel.
Brad prefers carbide tools in his pen turning.
Experience shows! Brad turned the two halves of this pen accurately down to the ‘sizing bushings’ in a few moments.
Final assembly after a quick sanding and application of a ShelaWax friction polish.
Brad ‘designs for the common types of grip’ he sees in his customers. There is no standard grip that works for everyone in his experience.
